General George Armstrong Custer (Dec. 5 1839 – June 25 1876) was a U.S. general during the American Civil War and the Indian War. En route to an expedition against the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho Nations, scouts informed Custer of a large gathering of Native Americans near the Little Bighorn River in the Eastern Montana territory. Despite the fact that Custer’s mission was to force the tribes to return to their reservations, he decided that a cavalry charge would effectively cause the gathering to disperse. What became known as the Battle of Little Bighorn followed. It is believed by many historians that Custer, already a popular general, was intending to run for President of the United States and believed he need one more victory against the native Americans. Regardless of this fact, Custer’s forces were outnumbered by 3 to 1 and suffered great losses. Custer himself was killed by two bullets, one in his left temple and one in his breast. There is no proof that Custer’s body was mutilated after his death. He was buried on the battlefield with fully military honors.
